Dailymail.co.uk: ‘I Haven’t Been This Free Since I Was 21’ Says Tired Pony’s Peter Buck

TP_London_06Snow Patrol singer Gary Lightbody and former REM guitarist Peter Buck know all about paying their dues. The rockers – who play London’s Barbican Centre on Saturday as part of country-rock supergroup Tired Pony – both languished in obscurity before conquering the world’s arenas.

But the wilderness years allowed Irishman Lightbody, 37, and American Buck, 56, to hone the skills that produced anthems like Chasing Cars and Everybody Hurts.

I couldn’t tune a guitar when we made the first Snow Patrol album,’ Gary admits. ‘If we’d been successful too quickly, I’d have left a trail of destruction behind me.’

Buck goes further: ‘If the first REM album, Murmur, had sold a million, I’d be dead or insane by now. We were young and stupid, and we wouldn’t have been able to handle success.’

Buck’s latest collaboration with Lightbody — they first worked together three years ago — arrives at an interesting time. With REM disbanded, and Buck’s 19-year-old twin daughters, Zelda and Zoe, at university, the guitarist is at a loose end. ‘I haven’t been this free since I was 21,’ he says.

The Ghost Of The Mountain is a progression from their 2010 debut, The Place We Ran From. More polished, it combines alternative country, electronics and big, soulful rock numbers.

Lightbody devised a narrative, based around two characters — one male and one female — for the album which allows for cameos from female vocalist Kim Topper, Irish actress Bronagh Gallagher (who appeared in The Commitments) and Minnie Driver (in great voice on Your Way Is The Way Home).

‘I wanted a female presence,’ Gary explains. ‘Bronagh is soulful; Kim has this strange, Bjork-like quality; and Minnie has a lovely country voice. I met her after I did music for her film, I Give It A Year, and asked her to sing with me.’

Tired Pony play the Barbican on September 14th (barbican.org.uk). The Ghost Of The Mountain is out now on Fiction.

  1. No longer do I need to stand in line with the coffee shop then have to
walk down the street clutching a paper cup packed with scalding liquid.
Along with one-touch technologies, you should have precise control over your personal brewing (and there
isn’t any grinding or messy cleaning up afterwards). One
final way in which coffee machine reviews will help you is that you may be trying to fill a specific need along with your new purchase.

  2. It’s hard to come by educated people on this topic,
however, you seem like you know what you’re talking about!
    Thanks

  3. I started doing CrossFit just how to find a rich man uk kind of as

If you people have any problem just remember bhai.
It’s nothing good to make a difference to our lives.

Such is the _conscious_ master, and man can only thus become by discovering _within himself_ the laws of
nature against their better impulses, for the interest is accumulating against you.

  4. I think that what you composed made a ton of sense.
However, what about this? suppose you added a little information?
I ain’t saying your information isn’t solid, however what if
you added a headline that makes people desire more?
I mean Dailymail.co.uk: I Havent Been This Free Since I Was 21′ Says
Tired Ponys Peter Buck | TheThirdBar.com is a little plain.
You should glance at Yahoo’s front page and note how they create news headlines to grab people to open
the links. You might add a video or a pic or two to get
people interested about what you’ve written. Just my opinion, it might make your
blog a little bit more interesting.

  5. I every time spent my half an hour to read this blog’s content every day along with a mug of coffee.
