Belfast Telegraph: Snow Patrol Headlining REM-themed Belfast Gig To Aid Alzheimer’s Fight (Unconfirmed)

spSnow Patrol are expected to headline a special charity concert in Belfast at the end of the month.

A number of local bands will take to the stage at the Limelight 2 on December 30 for a show in aid of Alzheimer’s Research, with rumours circulating of a mystery headline act for the ‘REMember’ show.

According to sources, Snow Patrol have agreed to perform at the fundraiser as a one-off, playing a set of their own songs as well as a few covers by American rock band REM, who announced their split in 2011.

Many of the bands taking part in the gig were influenced by the music of REM, including Snow Patrol. Bangor-born lead singer Gary Lightbody performs alongside REM’s former lead guitarist Peter Buck in his side project, Tired Pony.

Gig promoter Joe Lindsay said he had been keen to organise an event for research into Alzheimer’s for some time now, as it was an illness that was close to his heart.

And he said he was delighted with the support he had received from Northern Ireland’s musicians.

“This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while, as I have a personal family connection to Alzheimer’s,” he said. “It is a devastating illness and very tough on the carers, and research into it is still drastically under-funded.

“There is still so much to learn about it, from its cause to its prevention.” Joe, a well-known local DJ and television presenter, said he decided on the REM theme because he had been a fan of the band from their early days and knew many local acts had been heavily influenced by their music.

“Without REM, we wouldn’t have seen bands like The Pixies and Nirvana, and here in Northern Ireland, many of the young bands have picked up on their style and joined the dots back.”

Joining headliners Snow Patrol will be Runaway Go, The Jane Bradfords, War Hole and Katie Richardson, with other acts to be announced in the coming weeks.

Tickets are £10 and available from Katy Daly’s and Ticketmaster. All proceeds from the show will go to Alzheimer’s Research.

Each act will perform a selection of REM songs and their own compositions.
