Band discuss shunning the ‘supergroup’ title in favour of ‘side project’
The term “supergroup” is one that gets thrown about far too often and to Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol fame, it comes with connotations of clashing egos. That is the very antithesis of Tired Pony however, a group composed of himself, R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, Iain Archer, Richard Colburn from Belle and Sebastian, Jacknife Lee, Scott McCaughey and Troy Stewart. Instead Lightbody prefers to refer to this gathering of names as a “side-project”.
Despite this relaxed definition, the group are past their second album and gearing up to record their third offering, one that will follow the spirit of Americana that runs through the band. Speaking to Gigwise, Lightbody says he has his eye on recording in New Orleans, pushing the sound towards a southern brass band flavour that will take the group further into unexplored territory. It’s a side-project that is undoubtably running away with itself on its own terms and one that will continue as long as the members are having fun.
