Belfast Telegraph: Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody Serenades Northern Ireland Squad Ahead Of Romania Clash

Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody joined Northern Ireland players on Thursday for training session ahead of their crucial top-two European Qualifying clash with Romania.

The Bangor-born musician was invited to take part in the session at Windsor Park having met Northern Ireland coach Austin MacPhee while playing football in Los Angeles earlier this year.

Lightbody said he had “one of the best days ever” and had fulfilled a childhood dream.

After training, Lightbody joined the team at the Culloden Estate and played impromptu gig for the team.

The 38-year-old singer said: “I spent the morning with the team, had breakfast with them, went on the coach to Windsor, got to play at Windsor with a Northern Ireland top and got to score a couple of goals at Windsor. It was cool.

“It was something I’ve dreamed about doing since I was a wee boy.”

He said he will be at Windsor Park to support the team on Saturday. The singer, who turns 39 next week, said a win for Northern Ireland would be the perfect birthday gift.
