Gary Lightbody, the Northern Irish singer with Snow Patrol, is to write the songs for a new Commitments-style TV series set in Dublin during the 1990s. The show is envisaged as a romantic comedy that tells the story of a struggling band.
The series is being made by a London-based production company and written by Irish woman Aoife Crehan. The producers said it will be similar in style and tone to The Commitments, the 1991 screen adaptation of Roddy Doyle’s novel that became a stage musical in 2013; to Once, the 2007 Oscar-winning film later adapted for the stage; and to Sing Street, John Carney’s 2016 musical about Dublin teenagers.
